- artistic license or artistic slaughter ?In Foundation Discussions·8 octobre 2021If this series were not based on a book, I would have nothing negative to say about it. However as it is based on Asimov's Foundation novel I am regretfully very disappointed. The incongruities in the story line differ so drastically from the book as to make it nearly unrecognizable from the novel it draws its name from. I feel this is a slap in the face to one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time. Asimov would never have signed off on this mockery!328435
- Perspective and Gaal Dornik (spelling?) (Speculation) (Spoilers)In Foundation Discussions·26 septembre 2021First off, I butchered the spelling of Gaal Dornik so I apologize for that. Second off I am going to speculate on something that could have major spoilers so turn back now in case I am right or wrong. 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Speculation and Possible Spoilers begins here. Gaal is narrating about things from a retrospective perspective. She mentions Stars End and The Mule in passing. She appears to have a certain intuition about her as well as the unlikely luck of not only escaping from a planet where religion has curtailed science, but in spite of her removing the sacred metal pieces from her face, seers or the religious leaders of her world still communicate with her. She is an outcast on her home-world, but the seer on Trantor still agrees to sit with her. Later she bravely joins Hari Seldon in speaking truth to power by supporting Hari’s hypothesis in direct opposition to the Emperor. Note that the Emperor is capable of having people executed who have devoted their lives to him just for being in position of literature related to Seldon’s predictions and yet this murderous man gives Hari everything he wanted and he does so feeling as though he has taken the best advantage of the situation. This is a guy who only cares about preserving the “Empire’s Peace” which in my opinion is just semantics for “Power.” That is all Cleon wants and enjoys. Now at the end of episode 2, Gaal got shot out into space, presumably for what? Well did she leave behind any genetic material for the child she conceived with Hari’s adopted son? Is the woman 35 years after the flashback related to her? How is it that Gaal seems to cautiously move through crisis with grace? I suspect she is going to have a role in setting up the second foundation at Star’s End and those of you who read the book all know what I am talking about. Perhaps she is not consciously aware of it, but what if that was the reason why Hari also chose her. Is she going to start the Second Foundation?315184

This said, on the question of whether Asimov would have signed off on this project, I'd say the evidence points to a likely yes. After the original trilogy, Asimov didn't add to it for decades. Then he wrote additional books on the same universe. And he wrote things that fans weren't expecting. He merged the Foundation universe with his robot stories, that before people had seen as separate. And in "Foundation's Edge", he slaughtered the Seldon Plan, which was a shock to many fans. After Asimov died, his estate agreed that three famous science fiction writers, Gregory Benford, Greg Bear and David Brin, would write three additional books to the Foundation series, that were called the Second Foundation Trilogy. These books took things into even more unexpected directions. The three writers called themselves "the killer B's" for this project, which makes me think that pushing the envelope was the intention all along. The Asimov estate has also signed off on this TV series, and specifically Robyn, Asimov's daughter, has given her agreement. I think this is significant because Robyn was the inspiration for the character of Arcadia in the original Foundation trilogy, so it's fair to assume she feels an emotional connection to the Foundation universe. In short, all the evidence suggests that the way Asimov saw the Foundation universe was that he was more interested in considering the ways that it could plausibly expand than in keeping it rigidly confined to the original trilogy.410
- I'm not moved by Episode 8In Foundation Discussions·6 novembre 2021What's the real punchline here? ... Hari's creating a 2nd Foundation, the psychic one, on Helicon vs some secret location on Trantor, as in the books. And then, he realizes that Gaal's got "psychic" abilities and could help the 2nd Foundation. Hello?! Who was he recruiting to begin with?! People with extraordinary gymnastic abilities? Sure, add another psychic to Wanda's club (assuming that Wanda from the book is around) but now, the Mule doesn't even have to search very hard. Look no further than Hari's home planet for the psychic clubhouse. As far as the Emperor goes, I'm suppose to be believe that a walk through a desert w/o food and water is suppose to conjure 'galaxy shattering' visions. Guess what? That happens to people, when they're mildly sleep deprived nevermind the whole desert visionquest which is as old as the times before the Old Testamount on our own earth. Almost anyone on a desert trip gets lightheaded and delusional, esp in face of the heat and dehydration. And having visions or hallucinations doesn't say anything about the condition of one's soul given the fact that stories about 'Trinities' call it Osiris, Isis, and Horus in ancient Eqypt, Brahma, Atma, Vishnu in ancient & present-day India/Hinduism, Father, Son, & Holy Spirit in Christianity. It's called a universal archetype, if you're into Jung et al. Any signs of the symbol of 3 or even better, 7, which encompasses the deadly sins, the etheric bodies, the chakras, etc. If the Emperor saw three dancing elephants wrapped around seven gorillas then as far as I'm concerned, he's explained the essence of Kundalini Yoga through a metaphor. Congrats, he's now Guru Cleon the 13! Eat your heart out Dalai Lama, there's a new Bodhisattva in town! If this is the religion of 10000 years from now, then I'll stick with earth's denominations. And the jump ship piece was just dragged out from the prior episode. Nothing new here except that I think Farra and Salvor won't be becoming friends in the future.118146
- Incredible (Minor Spoilers)In Season 1·24 septembre 2021I loved the first episode and how it perfectly captured the first section of the first book while incorporating other elements to add expediency to the situation. Jared Harris is Hari Seldon and Apple spared no expense whatsoever in creating what looks to be a quality adaptation of the Grand Master’s work. Do not miss it.5792

- Space Elevators Should Not Extend That Far!In Foundation Discussions·23 août 2021I'm so excited about this show, I dream of it in my sleep. That said, I have a complaint about the latest FOUNDATION trailer. In the Exclusive Trailer Breakdown published by IGN, David Goyer says that a space elevator "is literally an elevator that stretches something like, 26 miles into space, out into orbit", which is a very reasonable description of what a space elevator should be. However, in the trailer there is a shot of the space elevator stretching out several hundred thousand miles, if not over a million miles, away from Trantor. It stretches so far away that you can see the entire sphere of the planet below the elevator. Now, I understand how a shot can be metaphorical, like the one in which Spock watches the destruction of Vulcan with the naked eye from the surface of Delta Vega in JJ Abrams' Star Trek (2009), but I sincerely hope FOUNDATION steers clear from metaphorical shots like that. I really hope this ridiculous shot gets edited out from the final cut of whichever episode it appears in. Of course, an exception to this would be if this space elevator actually stretches all the way up to a stationary moon of Trantor, or something of the sort, in which case the shot would actually make sense. I’ve had it marked on my calendar for months and all of a sudden it pops up on my phone and there’s 2 episodes available!!! im going to do a coupe rewatches but my first watch through was amazing. I just love it. Never read the books but I’m definitely sticking with the show!5269
