- why is there a space elevatorIn Foundation Discussions3 novembre 2021all of these are valid points.. but only for today (and for the next century) not for 30 000 years in the future when people have already solved everything about gravity and easily ascend to space with smallest ships. I'm not asking the validity of space elevator in general, I'm asking the logic of having it in the foundation era.. you know plow is a very good tool in farming but if I see farmers plowing land with oxen in trantor, then I ask the same thing.. why is there middle aged farming techniques in trantor. and it's the same for space elevator because when the people living in 31st century look back, they would probably regard the plow and the space elevator as the same primitiveness.1

Here's the problem with the space elevator in reality ... it's a retro-20th century notion, popularized by Arthur C Clarke some ~70 years ago. IMHO, it's already archaic from the perspective of Sci-Fi. When ppl are capable of commandeering a shuttle craft into orbit, within minutes of ground departure, why would they want to queue up for a 12-14 hour vertical train ride (no sleeper carriage), the same amount of annoying time it takes to go from NYC to Tokyo with today's subsonic jet airliner? And this doesn't even take into account the additional travel time it takes to get from let's say planet A in the Alpha Centuri system, to planet J in the Sirius system on a star cruiser. Star Trek already closed this issue by ppl taking a small shuttle into space and then, taking off on a long distance star cruiser to hop around from star system to star system. Trantor, being the megapolis that it is, will have no trouble having shuttle mini-spaceports at every urban nexus, with rides into high orbit to dock onto jacked up space stations to board interstellar vessels. In a way, it'll be a lot like today's major airports but in space instead of on the ground where yes, security can isolate potential terrorists, coming and going from the planet. One or two lone bombers, with nano-explosives, wouldn't be able to cripple the entire planet's space travel if it wasn't for that single point of failure.10

- why is there a space elevatorIn Foundation Discussions17 octobre 2021If those are antimatter bombs then, once again, we're faced with an absurdity. Once you can make antimatter, you can fuel and power ANYTHING for as long as you want (one gram of antimatter could fuel a trip from Earth to Pluto!). Which means no inhabited planet in that galaxy would be without clean, endless power. So, no climate change planet drowning thanks to bad energy decisions, right? As for cracks in the empire allowing those bombers to do what they did...,the show hasn't demonstrated those cracks to us. To the contrary, the first two episodes emphasize again and again how incredibly smart and competent and paranoid the leaders are. That's one of the many problems I see with this series. The Emperor and others are hyper competent and thinking twelve steps ahead...and the only way to take them out is to make them do something stupid and unbelievable. That's sloppy writing.1

- Best episode so far!In Season 1·12 novembre 2021I am going to be general here because I do not want to spoil anything for anyone. For me anyway, the penultimate episode of season one of Foundation redeemed and renewed my excitement for the series. It has a brisk pace, lots of action and a few surprises and it has that way in which Asimov cleverly solved problems that made me fall in love with the books. This really brings things together and has me very excited for the season finale next week. What did you all think? Post your thoughts, ideas and predictions below please.
