- why is there a space elevatorIn Foundation Discussions3 novembre 2021@Mark A. Rivera, I am in full agreement with you! I am not a canon fundamentalist, and I actually find canon doctrine fanboys quite annoying. All I wanted to say is: the idea that Trantor has space elevators is neither new nor unique to the series, and the fact that it is already found in a FOUNDATION book approved by the Asimov estate gives the space elevator on the TV series additional credibility.1
- why is there a space elevatorIn Foundation Discussions3 novembre 2021@Alex Altorfer I also want to add so there is no misunderstanding that Benford, Bear and Brin were approved by the Asimov estate to write the trilogy of books that were released decades ago. You are one hundred percent correct about that. However, if you invite someone to build an extension to your house, the contractor can state, I built the extension, but the contractor cannot take credit for the building of the entire house. Without Asimov we could not even have this interaction. Without the house, the contractor has no job. I think it was a great honor to add to the house Isaac built, but their credit remains only that small section that three different writers collaborated after the death of the builder’s design had been set in motion. We all get to visit when we read the page, but ultimately it is up to the reader to decide what is cannon or not. Many fans of Dune ignore the works of Frank Herbert’s son and Kevin J. Anderson. Readers of A Song of Ice and Fire who hated how the series ended, do not consider those final seasons to be official. The sequel trilogy in Star Wars accomplished making a trilogy that feels like an add on and does not gel with the first six films. Yet there are those who will say if Disney owns it then they can do whatever they want. That is correct, but say what you want about Lucas, the prequels still fit together with the classic trilogy and at least we got to see Lucas’s vision. The sequels are not what Lucas intended. So we will never know exactly how things would have turned out if they followed his instructions to the letter. Even if you know every difference between what was proposed and what we got, it is all speculation in the end. So I don’t know what Asimov would have done had he continued to live. I have no idea if he would have agreed with everything Benford, Bear and Brin did with their trilogy. So you can like or dislike whatever you want. For me personally I have my own vision of what Foundation is just like everyone else does. I only consider Asimov’s work to be cannon. That is my choice as a reader. You have your view. When I think about Asimov, I don’t think about the other Authors’ extensions done after the fact to his home and without his personal approval. It is the same thing with this TV show, I would not tell someone I read Foundation as though I read the novel and then produce Goyer’s script. Anyway, that is all I have to state. Right or wrong is subjective. I am not going to discuss this further. Thank you.1

- why is there a space elevatorIn Foundation Discussions2 novembre 2021My alternative to anti-matter bombs is that these are television science fiction bombs. An amazing bit of science...they do whatever the writers want them to do, no explanation that agrees with the laws of time, space or physics needed. 🤣 And, yes, I understand that you believe the writers should get the benefit of the doubt. That they're doing all this work on the series and so must have figured it all out. My view is that the many holes in each and every episode says the opposite. I think they decided they didn't have the time or inclination to explain the bombs...and that they didn't need to as the audience wouldn't care. And they're probably right about that. The bombs bring down their "Twin Towers" metaphor, allowing the writers to focus on the results of that disaster, which, to them, is way more important than pouring any time or effort into why/how the bombs worked.1

- Space Elevators Should Not Extend That Far!In Foundation Discussions23 août 2021Yes you are right it is true that this space elevator seems disproportionate ! As it is a simple fan site, I hope indeed that David Goyer will one day read your post. 😊 I will move your post to the "Foundation discussions" section. This section is intended to provide ideas for improvement to the site and to help feed the characters and elements of the series. I can't wait for the mobile app to finally be available on IOS and Android. This will allow many more people to join this forum and participate actively like you. With the various social network applications (Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), it is difficult in 2021 to keep a fan forum alive. But we will soon have a social network dedicated to Foundation ! 😉10

- The Empire's symbolIn Foundation Discussions9 octobre 2021My guess is it's because the symbol, as it was represented on the cover of the book, reminds people of the NASA logo: The symbol on the cover of the book isn't quite how Asimov described it. In "Foundation" he described it so: "The golden globe with its conventionalized rays, and the oblique cigar shape that was a space vessel." The illustrator already took an artistic licence changing the "cigar shape", which is, realistically, how everybody expects a rocket and most spaceship designs to look, into an arrow-point. It's very likely that the similarity to the NASA logo is entirely deliberate. After all, most SF fans are also NASA fans. The problem is that the international audience may not all be fans of NASA, because what about ESA, Roscosmos, CNSA and ISRO? Some redesign was needed anyway, and clearly they decided to go for a complete re-think that has the symbol for planet Earth as the main feature.10
