- Episode 4 - What are your thougts ? [Spoiler]In Season 111 octobre 2021I'm wondering about Salvor Hardin's mentalic powers, too. In the books, the Second Foundation has mentalic powers and psychohistory, the First Foundation has physical technology and (eventually) visible power. Salvor Hardin in the book knew a little bit about psychohistory, it looks like in the series she has a bit of mentalic powers instead. But what if those two aren't entirely separate things? What if mentalic powers make it easier for people to understand psychohistory in an intuitive way, or if an understanding of the maths underlying psychohistory can somehow unlock mentalic powers in some people? Then it would make a lot of sense for the Second Foundation to have both. I'm not even sure there are going to be two Foundations in the series. Terminus has at least one person with metalic powers and the Prime Radiant with all the psychohistory equations. It will be rather interesting if in the series there is only one Foundation and Arcadia's idea about the Second Foundation (they live among the First Foundation) is what's actually happening. Even if there are two Foundations in the series, in the books there were some Second Foundationers living in the First Foundation at least at one point, so there is no rule in the Seldon Plan against that. And I don't see why there would be a rule against any of those Second Foundationers being psychohistorians. The rule, if anything, would be that psychohistorians don't teach openly about psychohistory outside of the Second Foundation.10
- Space Elevators Should Not Extend That Far!In Foundation Discussions15 novembre 2021Here is an interesting article that elaborates on the size of the space elevator. Cheers! https://www.fxguide.com/fxfeatured/foundational-visual-effects/10
- why is there a space elevatorIn Foundation Discussions3 novembre 2021Well if it was after the fall of the Empire than I might not be surprised about the plow, but I get your point. There is no space elevator in the book. I mean I think we can all safely assume that was an event carried out for dramatic effect, but you know even today we use things that have existed for centuries in more modern forms. I guess you could state the space elevator itself was a sign of the empire’s stagnation made manifest.1

- Absolutely AwfulIn Foundation Discussions26 octobre 2021If it has to be explained to you, you're not capable of understanding it. Asimov's Salvor Hardin wouldn't have been caught dead with a gun. But I certainly understand how explorations of war & peace, fallen empires, dark ages, human avarice, religion & technology could never be as captivating as Black Wonder Woman getting laid and blasting away at CGI aliens. I can recall more compelling plotlines & dialogue in the Marvel comics I read as a kid. The producers of this joke are clearly catering to the lowest common denominator. No shame in that, obviously. Gotta make some money. Frito Lay peddles more Cheetos - by an order of magnitude - than Ruth's Chris sells rib eyes. You are more than welcome to the junk food. We all have different palates.10
- why is there a space elevatorIn Foundation Discussions14 octobre 2021A space elevator is an energy-saving device. The minimum amount of energy required for lifting a given mass to a given height above a planet can be precisely calculated. A space elevator is a device that allows you to lift that mass for an amount of energy so close to the minimum, that it should be better than any other method of propulsion, including exotic technologies we don't know anything about. So the question should be rather: Why wouldn't everyone on Trantor use the space elevator to go into space? But presumably there are practical limitations on its use.10
- Foundation is out at ...In Season 123 septembre 2021@The Mule (Admin), of course, we are assuming Apple will release FOUNDATION simultaneously worldwide. This is only an assumption. The avant premiere may apply only to the USA. If that's the case, then Foundation would only be viewable elsewhere later, perhaps 3 hours later, 1 AM in Brazil or 6AM in Switzerland. Or perhaps it's released at Midnight in every country, who knows, but I hope the USA release time is simultaneous everywhere.1
- Space Elevators Should Not Extend That Far!In Foundation Discussions5 octobre 2021Actually, to have a space elevator you need to have the center of mass at the geostationary orbit which is actually 22,236 miles up. So many space elevators in theory will be around twice that length, or will have a VERY massive counterweight past 22,236 miles so that as I said, the center of mass is AT 22,236 miles. Not sure where you got 26 miles from...10
- why is there a space elevatorIn Foundation Discussions3 novembre 2021@Mark A. Rivera, I am in full agreement with you! I am not a canon fundamentalist, and I actually find canon doctrine fanboys quite annoying. All I wanted to say is: the idea that Trantor has space elevators is neither new nor unique to the series, and the fact that it is already found in a FOUNDATION book approved by the Asimov estate gives the space elevator on the TV series additional credibility.1
- why is there a space elevatorIn Foundation Discussions3 novembre 2021@Alex Altorfer I also want to add so there is no misunderstanding that Benford, Bear and Brin were approved by the Asimov estate to write the trilogy of books that were released decades ago. You are one hundred percent correct about that. However, if you invite someone to build an extension to your house, the contractor can state, I built the extension, but the contractor cannot take credit for the building of the entire house. Without Asimov we could not even have this interaction. Without the house, the contractor has no job. I think it was a great honor to add to the house Isaac built, but their credit remains only that small section that three different writers collaborated after the death of the builder’s design had been set in motion. We all get to visit when we read the page, but ultimately it is up to the reader to decide what is cannon or not. Many fans of Dune ignore the works of Frank Herbert’s son and Kevin J. Anderson. Readers of A Song of Ice and Fire who hated how the series ended, do not consider those final seasons to be official. The sequel trilogy in Star Wars accomplished making a trilogy that feels like an add on and does not gel with the first six films. Yet there are those who will say if Disney owns it then they can do whatever they want. That is correct, but say what you want about Lucas, the prequels still fit together with the classic trilogy and at least we got to see Lucas’s vision. The sequels are not what Lucas intended. So we will never know exactly how things would have turned out if they followed his instructions to the letter. Even if you know every difference between what was proposed and what we got, it is all speculation in the end. So I don’t know what Asimov would have done had he continued to live. I have no idea if he would have agreed with everything Benford, Bear and Brin did with their trilogy. So you can like or dislike whatever you want. For me personally I have my own vision of what Foundation is just like everyone else does. I only consider Asimov’s work to be cannon. That is my choice as a reader. You have your view. When I think about Asimov, I don’t think about the other Authors’ extensions done after the fact to his home and without his personal approval. It is the same thing with this TV show, I would not tell someone I read Foundation as though I read the novel and then produce Goyer’s script. Anyway, that is all I have to state. Right or wrong is subjective. I am not going to discuss this further. Thank you.1
