This program is so far off the original story, perhaps out of necessity, but I quickly came to the conclusion that I’ll have to enjoy this program, or not, based on it’s own merits. Not think of it as Asimov’s Foundation. Otherwise I‘d spend the entire series wondering (complaining?) about everything from questionable casting choices to profound deviations from the story.

The most popular character in The Walking Dead wasn't in the source material at all.......Just sayin'
I forget. What did Seldon do to slow the decline?
Actually, in the Asimov books Hari Seldon at one point tries to slow the decay of the Empire from the inside. It doesn't look to me like in the series they are going to have that bit in, because in the series Eto Demerzel hasn't stepped down by the time Gaal shows up, so I'd assume Eto Demerzel in the series has been with the Emperor for quite a while. I certainly don't mind ignoring that part, it never seemed all that believable. And since Demerzel is well aware of Hari Seldon's work, it makes sense for her to take on the role of trying to slow the decay from the inside.
There are changes in supporting characters. I imagine that happens in many movies adapted from books. I don't mind as long as they don't do stuff like having Hari Seldon try to become Emperor. THAT would be a major storyline deviation!!
Actually, it's deviating from the story already in some ways. I'm not sure that Raych and Gaal even meet at all in the books (the Foundation is big enough that not all main characters need to meet), while in the series they have a major relationship. And Gaal is a minor character in the books, but she seems to have become a combination of Gaal, Manella and (probably) Wanda. Also, to me it seems to be implied that Gaal somehow stays around for a long time, which doesn't happen for any of those three characters in the books.
But then, Foundation was never really about the characters, so I see taking major liberties with the characters as acceptable, as long as the main ideas in the books get to play out.
It's not really deviation from the story yet. It's too early. Think of it like this: There was a 50 year gap in Asimov's book, from chapter 1 to chapter 2. What happened in those 50 years? The show is just filling that in.
